Teaching

Psychology can help students think critically about human behavior and societal issues, to examine their position and purpose in everyday life, and to practice applying complex theoretical content to lived experiences. I am committed to interdisciplinary work in my teaching and research. In my courses, I integrate critical race and ethnic studies as well as feminist studies. I draw from critical psychology and anthropology and philosophy to discuss the context of psychology and the theories I teach. I see my role as a teacher to facilitate such growth and learning and to engage students and myself in difficult conversations that open space for questions, making mistakes, and taking responsibility for our actions.

Teaching at the City University of New York (CUNY) has meant that I have taught students from all kinds of life experiences, various level of preparedness for college, from around the globe, and in a wide range of classes. This experience and my training in critical social psychology have shaped my approach in the classroom, in particular my commitment to facilitate learning through collaborative learning, lived experiences, and critical thinking about social contexts and systems of oppression. Students and teachers bring to the classroom a wealth of experiences that provide valid sources of learning. My goal is to help students develop the tools and structures to examine what we already know (e.g., that social context shapes behaviors) and to critically analyze how we come to know it (e.g. asking about how evidence comes about and is agreed upon).
